And she definitely hadn’t expected to find him… charming.

"So, let me get this straight," Jake said, stirring his milkshake lazily. "This whole thing—science, books, numbers—makes sense to you?"

Emma smirked, taking a sip of her coffee. "Yeah, it's called having a brain, Jake. You should try it sometime."

"Wow." He put a hand over his heart. "And here I thought we were bonding."

Emma rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t hide the small smile creeping onto her lips.

Jake noticed. "Aha! You do like me."

Emma nearly choked on her drink. "Excuse me?"

"You smiled, Em," he said smugly. "That means you’re falling for me."

She scoffed. "It means I find you mildly tolerable. Don’t get ahead of yourself."

But as much as she tried to deny it, she couldn’t ignore the way her heart did weird things whenever Jake looked at her like that—like she was the only person in the room.
